The Sanctity of Life, the Unborn, and Christian Responsibility
The Bible teaches that human life is sacred. Every person has value because human beings are made in the image and likeness of God.
Genesis 1:26 says that God created mankind in His image. This makes human life unique among all creatures. People are not merely biological beings; they are spiritual beings with the capacity for relationship with God.
Because of this, the Bible treats the taking of innocent human life as a serious sin. Genesis 9:6 teaches that human life must be respected because man is made in the image of God.
Life Begins Under God’s Care
Scripture shows that God knows and values human life even before birth. In Jeremiah 1:5, God says:
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”
Psalm 139 also speaks beautifully of God’s care in the womb:
“You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
— Psalm 139:13
These passages show that unborn life is not hidden from God or outside His concern. From a biblical perspective, human life is known, formed, and sustained by God from the earliest stage.
The Incarnation and Human Life
The incarnation of Jesus Christ is also important when thinking about the value of human life. The Son of God did not begin His earthly human life at the manger in Bethlehem, but at His conception by the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:20 speaks of Jesus being conceived by the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 2:14 and 2:17 teach that Jesus shared in our humanity and was made like us in every way.
Since Christ truly shared our human nature, His conception reminds Christians that human life is precious from its beginning, not only after birth.
The Christian View of the Unborn
Christians have historically regarded unborn life as worthy of protection. The early church rejected abortion and stood against practices that treated unborn children as disposable.
For this reason, many Christians affirm that human personhood begins at conception. A human embryo is not merely a thing or a collection of cells. It is human life at its earliest stage and should be treated with dignity and protection.
Ethical Implications
If human life is sacred from conception, then this belief has serious ethical implications.
Christians who hold this view oppose abortion because it ends innocent human life. They also oppose practices that deliberately destroy human embryos, including human cloning for destructive purposes and procedures or drugs intended to prevent the implantation of a newly conceived embryo.
This position is not based on hatred or lack of compassion. It comes from the conviction that every human life, including the unborn, has dignity before God.
Compassion and Responsibility
A biblical pro-life position should always be joined with compassion. Christians should care for mothers, fathers, unborn children, vulnerable families, and those who have experienced abortion.
The church should be a place of truth, mercy, support, repentance, healing, and practical help. Defending unborn life should also mean supporting women in crisis, encouraging responsible fatherhood, helping families in need, and showing grace to those carrying pain from past decisions.
Human life is sacred because God created it. Every person bears God’s image and has eternal value.
From conception to natural death, life belongs to God and should be protected. Christians should speak up for the unborn with courage, but also with humility, gentleness, and compassion.
