Why Parents Matter in a Child’s Moral, Educational, and Spiritual Life

The Bible teaches that parents have a God-given responsibility to raise their children. This responsibility includes love, instruction, protection, discipline, education, and moral guidance.
The fifth commandment says:
“Honour your father and your mother.”
— Exodus 20:12
This commandment is repeated and affirmed by both Jesus and the Apostle Paul. It shows that God has given parents a special place of authority in the lives of their children.
Parental Authority Must Be Loving and Responsible
Parental authority is not a licence for cruelty, abuse, or selfish control. Child abuse is wrong and completely incompatible with Scripture.
The Bible expects parents to exercise loving discipline, not harshness. Ephesians 6:4 says:
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
This means discipline should be careful, loving, fair, and aimed at the child’s good. Parents are called to guide their children with patience, wisdom, and compassion.
Scripture recognises that discipline can sometimes be painful, but its purpose should always be correction, growth, and maturity, not anger or harm (Hebrews 12:7–11).
Parents Should Not Be Undermined
Because God has given parents responsibility for their children, society should be careful not to undermine that authority unnecessarily.
Parents have the primary responsibility to teach their children right from wrong, protect them from harm, and guide them toward maturity. Laws and policies should respect this role and should not take authority away from parents without serious reason.
The state has a duty to protect children from abuse and neglect, but it should not replace parents in ordinary family decisions.
Children Need Moral Protection
Christians should be especially concerned about anything that weakens the moral protection of children. Jesus gave a serious warning about those who lead children into sin:
“If anyone causes one of these little ones… to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck…”
— Matthew 18:6
Children are vulnerable and should be protected from harmful influences, exploitation, and messages that rob them of innocence too early. Parents should be supported as they seek to raise their children with wisdom, purity, discipline, and faith.
Parents and Education
Parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children, even when they choose to send them to school or allow the state to assist in education.
Schools should respect the values of parents and should not deliberately undermine the moral and religious convictions of families, except in truly exceptional circumstances where a child is at serious risk of harm.
Education is not only about academics. It also shapes character, values, worldview, and behaviour. For this reason, parents should remain actively involved in what their children are being taught.
Parents and Healthcare Decisions
The special role of parents should also be respected in healthcare decisions. In most cases, parents are best placed to make decisions about what is in their child’s best interests.
The starting point should be that parents love their children and want what is best for them. Overriding parental decisions should require a very serious reason and a high standard of evidence.
Of course, children must be protected from neglect or clear harm. But parental views should not be dismissed lightly, especially in serious medical situations.
Finally
Parents have a sacred responsibility before God. They are called to raise their children with love, discipline, wisdom, protection, and moral guidance.
Christian parents should take this responsibility seriously. Society should also recognise that parents have a unique role that should be respected, not casually replaced.
Strong families help build strong communities. When parents are supported in raising their children well, children, families, and society all benefit.
